KLIA Aerotrain Pauses Overnight for Software Maintenance

KLIA Aerotrain Pauses Overnight for Software Maintenance

The train service will stop from 12am to 5am during October and November. Buses will transport passengers between the Main and Satellite buildings during these windows.

The KLIA Aerotrain will pause from 12am to 5am during software works in October and November. Here is how buses will move passengers in the meantime.

The KLIA Aerotrain will pause from 12am to 5am during two rounds of software works. The first runs in October and the second in November. Buses will replace it between the Main Terminal Building and the Satellite Building.

KLIA announced the plan on 7 October. If you land after midnight, it changes your route from the aircraft.

The first round starts tomorrow. It runs from 8 to 17 October.

The first phase is field testing, from 8 to 17 October. KLIA will install the software update and test it under actual operating conditions. The results then go to an independent safety assessment.

The second phase follows, subject to those assessments. The update would roll out permanently from 28 November to 1 December. In both phases, the pause runs from 12am to 5am.

That adds up to 14 days across the two phases. KLIA did not say whether every night in those windows is affected. It also did not say if the first pause starts on the night of 8 October. Check the airport’s notices before you fly.

KLIA chief operating officer Adam Nicholas Wilson said the aim is a smooth service. He said KLIA’s priority is a “reliable and smooth service” for passengers. The bus service runs throughout the works as a contingency arrangement.

The Aerotrain links the Main Terminal Building and the Satellite Building. During the pause, buses cover that link. KLIA says passengers should go to the bus lounge, where transfer buses wait.

KLIA gave no journey time, bus frequency or fare. It also did not give a contact number. So follow the signs to the bus lounge, and allow extra time if your flight lands after midnight.

KLIA said passengers can ask ground staff for help. If you are connecting, leave a longer gap between flights.

The pause affects only the late-night hours. KLIA did not give other details of how the service will run during the day.

The Aerotrain has had a rough history. The Vibes reported in May that it resumed in July 2025 after a two-year suspension. It then faced repeated technical disruptions.

Malaysia Airports introduced a comprehensive action plan in October 2025 to stabilise it. In the interim, buses ran from 11pm to 5am for maintenance. Similar overnight works ran from 18 to 31 August 2025, when contractor Alstom tested updated signalling software.

Malaysia Airports said that exercise did not disrupt passenger connectivity, because airside shuttle buses ran between the two buildings.

The same bus approach now returns for the KLIA Aerotrain. Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said then that the Aerotrain is “a vital link in KLIA’s operations”.

KLIA says the update follows 20,000 continuous operational hours. It also says the system has kept 99.9 per cent availability since the action plan finished in June.

For travellers, the practical point is simple. The works are short and limited to the small hours. Check KLIA’s notices before you fly.
