Houthi attacks on Saudi airports kill 3, injure 36 as Yemen fighting escalates

Abha International Airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh were targeted in attacks on October 6 and 7, GACA said.

Three people were killed and 36 others injured in separate attacks targeting two airports in Saudi Arabia, the kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said on Wednesday, as fighting between Iran-aligned Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed forces intensifies in Yemen.

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for strikes on both airports.

Two people, one Moroccan and one Algerian resident, were killed and 28 others injured in the attack on Abha airport. Those injured include Saudi, Bangladeshi and Filipino nationals.

At King Khalid International Airport, one Sudanese national was killed while eight people, including five Saudi citizens, two Egyptian residents and a Pakistani resident, were injured

“GACA is working in coordination with the relevant authorities to assess the damage, verify the safety of the facilities, and take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of passengers,” the authority said.

India has condemned the attacks, saying targeting civilian infrastructure is "completely unacceptable".

"We express our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We wish speedy recovery for those injured. We express solidarity and stand with the people and government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," the government said in a statement.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted King Khalid airport with drones and Abha airport with ballistic missiles and drones.

The attacks came amid a sharp escalation in Yemen, where Saudi-backed government forces have launched an offensive against the Houthis around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the western coast.

The Saudi-led coalition said it had retaliated by striking more than 80 Houthi military sites across Yemen, while Saudi forces also said they intercepted a ballistic missile north of Riyadh and destroyed a launch platform in Sanaa.
