Turkey Teams Up With Switzerland And More As UK Issues New Travel Advisory Amid Airport Delays, Tourist Safety Concerns And Rising Security Risks

The UK has raised travel warnings for Turkey, Switzerland, and Denmark due to flight delays, border controls, and security threats.

The United Kingdom alerts its holiday makers about flight delays, border controls, and security issues in Turkey, Switzerland, and Denmark. Travelers to Turkey, Switzerland, and Denmark will be facing varying travel warnings since the United Kingdom is raising issues such as airport delays, border control, security threats, and holiday safety issues in all these nations. The United Kingdom holiday makers traveling abroad in the latter part of 2026 are expected to check their travel advice regarding Turkey, Switzerland, and Denmark which face different issues of security, immigration, and transport challenges.

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has raised issues of terrorism, political protests, petty crimes, and regional conflicts in Turkey, while Switzerland and Denmark will face extra travel advice related to the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES). Passengers at Copenhagen Airport will be expected to experience long queues at the passport control, and those going to Switzerland should expect biometric controls at their borders.

The UK government’s travel guidance draws attention to several challenges that could affect British travellers visiting popular European and Mediterranean destinations. However, the warnings do not represent a blanket restriction on tourism across all three countries.

Turkey faces the most significant security-related concerns, particularly in areas bordering Syria, where the FCDO advises against all travel within 10 kilometres of the frontier. Elsewhere, demonstrations, terrorism risks and regional instability remain important considerations.

Switzerland and Denmark face different challenges. Visitors must follow Schengen immigration requirements, including biometric registration under the European Entry/Exit System. Passengers travelling through Copenhagen Airport may experience additional passport-control delays.

These differences are important because the potential disruption varies considerably between destinations.

Greenland and the Faroe Islands are included because the FCDO’s Denmark travel guidance also covers these territories.

Turkey remains an important international tourism destination, attracting visitors to Istanbul, Antalya, Cappadocia and its Mediterranean coastline. However, the FCDO has identified security challenges requiring travellers to exercise vigilance.

The strongest geographical warning concerns the Turkey–Syria border, where the UK advises against all travel within 10 kilometres because of fighting and heightened terrorism risks.

The advisory also highlights uncertainty across the Middle East. Regional military developments could affect international aviation, with possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and sudden changes to travel arrangements.

Travellers should distinguish these regional warnings from conditions in Turkey’s main holiday destinations, which are not covered by the same border-specific restriction.

The Turkey–Syria frontier presents particularly serious risks because of cross-border instability and the activities of extremist organisations.

The FCDO warns that terrorist groups operating in Syria, including Daesh and Al-Qaeda-linked organisations, retain the ability to conduct attacks in Turkey. Previous incidents have affected border crossings and locations near the frontier.

British travellers should avoid areas covered by the FCDO’s no-travel advice and consult regional guidance before travelling through southeastern Turkey.

Those considering overland journeys must also assess border restrictions, transport availability and the possibility of rapid changes in local security conditions.

Travelling against FCDO advice could also invalidate travel insurance, creating additional financial and practical risks.

Political demonstrations represent another significant concern for tourists visiting Turkey’s major cities.

The FCDO reports that protests regularly occur in Istanbul and other urban cen
