The extended standard gauge alignment would pass through agricultural areas south of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to reach Musoma and would also serve another mining region at Minjingu. ‘We have coal from Tanzania, and we have copper from Congo, so this route has a great potential’, Kibona suggested.

Kibona also confirmed that TRC was looking to procure more rolling stock for its expanding standard gauge operations as further sections of the network approach completion. ‘We are planning to buy 34 electric locomotives, 10 hybrid shunting locomotives, 1 000 freight wagons, 60 passenger coaches, five electric multiple-units, as well as six multi-purpose motor trolleys and eight reachstackers.’ he said. ‘We are now finalising the details for these tenders. The procurements are being funded by the state government.’ · Tanzania Railways Corp standard gauge locomotives and EMUs unveiled
