Set within Minato in central Tokyo, to reach Janu Tokyo from Haneda Airport, take the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho Station, where you can easily hail a taxi. If travelling from Narita Airport, get off at Tokyo Station and take a taxi. The hotel is part of the Azabudai Hills development, unveiled in 2023 after extensive planning. What was once a network of small streets and run-down buildings has been transformed into an “urban village” with modern apartments, office blocks, shopping malls, and designer boutiques, plus Japan's tallest building (325 metres): the Mori JP Tower.

What happened
The hotel, which opened in 2024, is discreet at ground level, with one entrance in the adjoining luxury shopping mall, plus the car drop-off is underground too.
The detail
If you’re in the mood to splurge, the designer shops and smaller boutique shops nearby – or the mall – are just the ticket.
The wider picture
The hotel is a highly anticipated opening – a sister brand to Aman, the inaugural Janu hotel features a chic, neutral colour palette that creates a distinct Japanese feel that’s refined and calming. Glimpses of modern Tokyo life – via panoramic views of the megacity from the lobby, including the Tokyo Tower – meet Japanese simplicity and pared-back luxurious design. The clientele were quite young, but there were families with kids and older international couples too.
What comes next
If there’s a small queue at reception, extra staff will appear to ensure nobody is idly waiting for help. Apart from a long wait for an iced latte at breakfast, service was impeccable yet laid-back, never feeling overbearing.
Additional context
The hotel has 122 guest rooms and suites, each decorated in a style that blends contemporary luxury with nods to Japanese interiors. Think sliding paper doors, furniture low to the floor, and subtle, muted tones of cream and white against natural wood.
Analysis
With some rooms facing Tokyo Tower and the rooftops of Azabudai, sitting out on the balcony is a real pleasure in the evenings.
Reactions
Bathrooms come with onsen-style tubs: deep and long with salts to sprinkle in. The modern bidet toilets can be heated in wintertime.
Developments
Space is used cleverly. The small entryways have space for luggage, and room divider doors can be adjusted to open the bathroom or entryway, or fully partition the two halves, evoking a Japanese ryokan.

The hotel has eight bars and eateries, including an Italian restaurant, a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant, and a contemporary Cantonese restaurant. The Janu Grill serves breakfast and feels like the hotel's beating heart. With panoramic views across the futuristic Azabudai Hills development – choose a window seat. The breakfast menu is a la carte, with plenty to choose from, including traditional Japanese breakfast with grilled fish, rice and miso soup, plus inventive treats like matcha pancakes, yoghurt parfaits or classic eggs Benedict.

During my stay, I tried an omakase menu at Ligura, the sushi restaurant. A kimono-clad staff member served us and was chatty and friendly. Peaceful and refined, Ligura’s omakase menu includes freshly caught seafood and fish, with outstanding melt-in-the-mouth tuna nigiri, slices of abalone that I watched the chef shuck in front of us, and refreshing, light vegetable soups. The sushi is fantastic and served with a choice of interesting drinks like sparkling sake or the freshest green tea served iced in a wine glass. The atmosphere and service are the best part of the experience.

There is a huge fitness centre across four floors including a fully-kitted-out gym, swimming pool, thermal spa houses – one Russian and one Moroccan-style – with steam rooms and plunge pools, plus treatment rooms for massage, facials and other treatments. The facilities include an onsen-style public bath. The four-story wellness pavilion has dedicated movement studios for spinning, boxing, yoga, and Pilates. Post-treatment, a tranquil relaxation lounge offers a serene space to unwind.

Connecting rooms are available when booking, plus complimentary beds for kids and infants and children’s menus at several restaurants. Children under 12 stay for free, and activities keep kids entertained, including origami workshops. During my stay, I saw lots of happy-looking families in the hotel, in keeping with the team’s warm, welcoming attitude.
