Kolkata airport’s effort to attract direct flights to London and other European cities is exposing a less visible condition of international connectivity: airlines also judge the terminal experience that passengers encounter before take-off. The airport’s international section currently has fewer retail outlets, weaker lighting, limited amenities and continuing maintenance concerns compared with its domestic area, according to airline and airport officials quoted in the report.
The issue gained significance after Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu said the Centre would discuss the possibility of direct flights from Calcutta to London and other European cities with airlines operating in India. The discussion followed a request from chief minister Suvendu Adhikari. No airline commitment or launch date is mentioned in the supplied material. Instead, the report describes the physical and operational changes airport stakeholders believe are needed before such connectivity can become attractive to carriers.
That makes the airport’s international terminal more than a backdrop to the proposed routes. It is part of the proposition being presented to airlines and travellers. Airline officials said the international section should offer facilities and amenities comparable with the domestic area. One official described the international departure section as dull, dimly lit and lifeless, while also pointing to the smaller number of shops in the security hold area.
The contrast matters because the security hold is where passengers spend time after completing security checks. In the international section, officials said there are only a handful of food and beverage outlets and no mishti stores. Bengali sweets are a distinctive part of the city’s travel identity, but international passengers cannot access the domestic section after entering the terminal. According to the report, passengers sometimes ask airline staff to buy mishti from domestic-area stores because they are uncertain whether sweets purchased outside will be permitted in hand baggage.
This is a small operational detail with a wider lesson. Airport experience is built through many points of contact: signage, lighting, washrooms, food, retail, money-changing services, luggage wrapping and the ease with which passengers can understand what is available to them. A missing amenity may not determine whether an airline launches a route, but a pattern of unfinished or poorly maintained facilities can shape how an airport is perceived by passengers and airline staff.
The retail gap is also connected to the way airport commercial space is managed. Airport sources said rigid tender clauses and high rates have discouraged brands from opening outlets. The problem is therefore not simply a lack of demand or a failure by retailers to recognise Kolkata’s identity. It also reflects the conditions under which commercial space is offered and operated inside the terminal.
The closure of the duty-free stores has added another layer to the problem. The report notes that the Airports Authority of India did not extend the contract with the agency operating the facility. A new agency has been awarded the tender, but customs clearance is still awaited. Airport officials said the new agency has begun installing infrastructure and that clearance is expected soon. Until that process is completed, an important international-terminal service remains unavailable despite a replacement operator having been selected.
This sequence illustrates the institutional chain behind an apparently simple passenger facility. A commercial service requires a tender, a contract, infrastructure installation and customs clearance before it can operate. Delays at any stage affect the passenger-facing terminal. The report does not establish how long the clearance process will take, but it shows that airport amenities depend on coordination between airport management, commercial operators and customs authorities.
Lighting and information systems are another area where the international section is described as lagging. Airline officials said illumination was inadequate compared with the domestic area and suggested a large display board similar to the one near gates 3A and 3B in the domestic departure area. That board carries s and information about airport programmes. The proposed comparison is not only about brightness; it is about whether the international section feels active, legible and maintained.
Washrooms show how the airport’s visible condition is experienced at ground level. Their condition has improved after renovations, but passengers and airline officials said further work is needed. A frequent flier cited occasional gutkha stains in washbasins and said lighting could be brighter. The same passenger said the facilities were still not comparable with those at Mumbai or Delhi airports. These observations are attributed to the people quoted in the report and do not amount to a formal performance assessment, but they identify the specific details passengers use to judge an airport.
Airport authorities have responded with a maintenance programme. A senior airport official said deep cleaning of washrooms and check-in areas is being conducted periodically using specialised chemicals to remove stains. The process also includes measures relating to ventilation and other technical issues. Two groups have been formed for daily maintenance and daily housekeeping, with staff checking the terminal for technical or operational problems and ensuring that housekeeping personnel are stationed in washrooms.
The airport is also carrying out painting and maintenance work in the car park. The upper level has been painted, while work in the basement is under way. These works may appear separate from the question of direct European connectivity, but they form part of the same airport environment that passengers encounter from arrival to departure. The supplied material does
WARSAW— LOT Polish Airlines (LO) has launched its new nonstop service between Warsaw (WAW) and Bangkok (BKK), opening a direct link between Poland and Thailand from October 7, 2026. The inaugural flight marks the carrier’s return to scheduled service on the route and gives travelers a direct alternative to connecting itineraries through other European or Middle Eastern hubs. The year-round route is already available for booking, while LOT has structured the service around two schedules during its initial launch period.
The airline will operate three weekly flights through October 25 before increasing the frequency to five flights per week for the winter 2026/2027 season. Photo-https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LOT_-_Polish_Airlines_-_Polskie_Linie_Lotnicze_Boeing_787-8_Dreamliner_-_SP-LRD_-_Flight_LOT41_from_EPWA_%2814270645385%29.jpg Warsaw Bangkok Schedule From October 7 through October 25, LOT will operate flight LO65 from Warsaw on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 3:45 p.m.
The return flight LO66 will depart Bangkok on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 9:05 a.m., giving passengers a consistent three-times-weekly option during the opening period. The schedule changes from October 26, when LOT increases the Warsaw-Bangkok service to five weekly departures. LO65 will then operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2:25 p.m., while LO66 will return to Warsaw on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8:45 a.m.
org/wiki/File:Boeing_787-9_%E2%80%98SP-LSA%E2%80%99_LOT_Polish_Airlines.jpg LOT Polish’s Boeing 787 Operations LOT will deploy Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on the long-haul route, with the Warsaw-Bangkok sector taking approximately 10 hours and 20 minutes. The return journey is scheduled to take about 11 hours and 55 minutes because of the different operating conditions on the westbound sector. The aircraft assignment can vary between Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft, according to published schedules.
Thailand’s tourism authority has previously listed a 252-seat configuration for the route, although the published schedule shows that LOT may also use the larger 787-9 on selected services. Direct Thailand Access Offered by LOT Polish The new service strengthens LOT’s long-haul network while giving passengers from Poland and surrounding Central European markets a nonstop option to Bangkok.
Travelers can therefore avoid an intermediate stop when flying between the two capitals, reducing the complexity of journeys that previously relied on connecting hubs. The launch also has broader significance for Thailand’s European tourism market. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has described Poland as a growing European source market and worked with LOT and travel-industry partners ahead of the launch to build demand for the new connection.
With tickets already available through LOT’s sales channels, passengers can book the initial three-weekly schedule or select from five weekly departures once the winter timetable begins on October 26. The expansion gives travelers greater flexibility as the year-round Warsaw-Bangkok service moves into its first full winter season. Stay tuned with us. Several flights will be cancelled at Brussels airport as ground handler staff join a nationwide strike in Belgium.
Some 100 flights have been cancelled on Friday, 9 October as a result of the strike, Brussels airport confirmed to The Independent.
Part of the staff from ground handler Alyzia are expected to take part in the national strike.
The airport expects only half of the flights handled by Alyzia to operate as planned, with the rest cancelled.
Brussels Airlines, Emirates and United Airlines are among the airlines that could be affected by the strike as they use Alyzia’s services.
Flights handled by Aviapartner will not be affected. This includes major airlines serving UK destinations such as British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Tui, and Wizz Air.
Some 400 flights will still operate on Friday, the airport said.
Brussels airport has released a list of airlines that operate at its base, along with its handler and contact details, so passengers can check whether their flight may be affected.
The flight overview on this list will show cancellations only after the airline registers them, the airport said.
“We regret the inconvenience caused by this union action,” Brussels airport added.
Further trade union action is taking place on Monday, 12 October, but the airport expects no impact on flights.
However, public transport disruptions are expected. Passengers are advised to check the websites of De Lijn, MIVB/STIB and NMBS/SNCB in advance and plan their journey to and from the airport accordingly.
The UK’s Foreign Office has warned that the strike will affect public transport and other public services in Brussels.
It adds that a demonstration will take place in central Brussels on Friday, 9 October.
“Monitor local news and check with your provider regarding potential delays and closures,” the advice states. “Always check with your travel operator for the latest updates.”
It’s general advice for demonstrations adds: “If you are in areas where large gatherings are taking place, remain vigilant and move away quickly if there are signs of disorder.
“Avoid protests, expect delays on some major roads and follow the advice of the authorities.”
This industrial action is the latest in a string of nationwide strikes in Belgium this year, with others taking place on 12 March and 12 May.
Brussels South Charleroi airport also experienced flight cancellations last month as its air traffic controllers went on strike.

Everyone knows that Air Canada is by far the largest international operator serving the North American country. In 2026, the Star Alliance member has an average 266 daily departures beyond Canada's borders. It has 37% of the market, rising to 39% for sales for sale due to widebody operations.
Air Canada's international flights are only at their seventh-highest level to date. They're down from the record of 326 daily departures held in 2018. This is broadly because the carrier is using higher-capacity aircraft, with a record 171 seats per flight in 2026. It was just 141 in 2018, when turboprops were much more commonly deployed internationally and 50-seater regional jets were heavily used.
Analyzing Air Canada's schedule using OAG data shows that only Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) has been removed from the airline's map this year. This does not include Dubai, as flights to that destination, which exist in partnership with Emirates, have simply been suspended. They'll resume next year.
Canada's flag carrier flew from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to BOM between July 2017 and March 2026, with no flights scheduled in the future. This is why Air India will launch this very long route on October 25, 2026.
Air Canada wanted to fly nonstop to/from the financial capital of India, which would have meant lower operating expenses, a quicker, more competitive offering, and greater aircraft availability. The ongoing war in Ukraine and the consequent inability to fly over Russia meant that this was not always possible.
In winter 2022/2023 and winter 2025/2026, flights stopped at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), with fifth freedom traffic rights. Four weekly departures on the Boeing 787-9 were available, down from a daily offering in the prior periods. Air Canada flew from Calgary International Airport (YYC) to Delhi via LHR in winter 2024/2025.
Four of the following five markets are in Cuba. Like Air Transat and WestJet, Air Canada has ended all services to the Caribbean country, which is ordinarily massively popular among Canadian vacationers. High-profile power outages, fuel shortages, food scarcity, and transportation disruptions all led to the suspension of flights. They will return, but it is unclear when. No departures are scheduled.
Montréal Trudeau International Airport (YUL), YYZ
This played a small role in Air Canada having a record number of flights to other hotspots this year. For example, departures to Mexico have exceeded the prior high, set in 2025, by 11%, while those to the Dominican Republic are now 25% above the previous record. Other places have grown too, but from much smaller bases, including St. Maarten (+73%), the Cayman Islands (+55%), the Bahamas (+41%), and Aruba (+37%).
Until now, this article has focused on 2026, but it is worth going back to 2025. Air Canada flew from YUL to Algiers, the capital of Algeria, between 2017 and 2018, when the airline's lower-cost unit, Rouge, was deployed. Mainline equipment was used between 2019 and 2025.
Flights were due to return in 2026 but were pushed back to 2027, influenced by the price of jet fuel. They were then removed altogether. The Francophone route revolved around Canadian Algerians, most of whom necessarily live in the French-speaking province of Quebec.
Nearly everyone visited friends and relatives, which is the lowest of the lowest for airline yields. It was perhaps Air Canada's lowest-yielding long-haul market. Air Algérie still serves the market and will be pleased about Air Canada's exit, which will help with traffic, loads, and yield performance. Air Canada's routes to Africa have now halved, but perhaps not for long.

Smart Packing Habits to Slash Your Airport Spending
Navigating the airport doesn't have to drain your travel budget before you even take off. These simple, cost-effective habits ensure you keep your money for the destination rather than the terminal.
1
The Empty Reusable Water Bottle
Bringing a lightweight bottle to fill after security avoids the high cost of bottled water. Most modern airports now provide dedicated filtered water stations for this exact purpose.
2
Pre-Packed High-Protein Snacks
Packing nuts, granola bars, or dried fruit prevents expensive impulse buys at airport kiosks. These items take up minimal space and keep you satisfied during long delays.
3
Digital Scales for Luggage Check
Using a small handheld scale at home prevents stressful and costly overweight baggage fees at the counter. It allows you to redistribute weight between bags before you leave for the airport.
4
The Personal Item Layering Method
Wearing your heaviest jacket and boots through security saves significant weight and space in your checked luggage. You can always remove layers and stow them once you are on the plane.
5
Offline Maps and Entertainment Downloads
Downloading your maps and media at home saves you from purchasing expensive airport Wi-Fi passes. This habit ensures you have navigation ready the moment you land without using roaming data.
6
Solid Toiletries and Travel Containers
Switching to solid shampoo or reusable travel tubes avoids the premium prices of 'travel-sized' liquids. It also reduces the risk of leaks and helps you breeze through security checkpoints.
7
Portable Power Bank Charging
Carrying a fully charged power bank means you never have to pay for premium charging stations or 'juice bars.' It keeps your digital boarding passes accessible without hunting for a free wall outlet.
