The rapid escalation in reports has already triggered operational disruptions across international transit networks, grounding commercial aircraft and sidelining commuter passenger trains. Travelers face heightened risks of transporting these wingless hitchhikers back home in suitcases and clothing.
From grounded long-haul passenger flights between Italy and Australia to taken-out-of-service rail lines in the UK, the blood-feeding pests are taking advantage of high passenger turnover and expanding chemical resistance. Surging Numbers and International Transit Disruptions The scale of recent infestations has caused severe interruptions for major travel operators. A Qantas passenger flight bound for Australia from Italy was canceled when the aircraft had to be grounded for an emergency deep-cleaning cycle following a live outbreak onboard. Ground transit systems are facing identical pressures.
Commuter rail services operating from the West Marina train depot near Hastings in East Sussex were pulled from active passenger service after infestations were detected inside passenger cars. Industry data collected by bedbug monitoring firm Valpas indicates that the parasites are turning up in one out of every 42 hotel rooms surveyed. Pest management specialists track a roughly 20 percent annual rise in cases across major European travel hubs. This compounding spike stems from a mix of relentless global tourism, frequent mobility, and increasing insecticide tolerance among insect populations.
Bedbugs are a problem for all travellers, regardless of destination. They are not a symptom of uncleanliness or bad habits otherwise, but rather the consequence of an insect’s success. Identifying the Pest and Debunking Common Myths Widespread misconceptions suggest that parasites thrive only in neglected or unsanitary environments. In reality, biological cleanliness has no bearing on their presence; five-star luxury suites carry the exact same statistical vulnerabilities as budget motels. Physically, adult bedbugs are flat, oval-shaped, wingless insects displaying a dark yellow, reddish, or brown tint.
They feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded hosts, primarily targeting exposed human skin during sleep cycles. Their bites frequently manifest in clustered, zig-zag lines across the arms, legs, and neck. While the resulting raised red marks cause intense itching, they rarely transmit secondary infectious diseases.
Characteristic Field Indicator Physical Appearance Flat, oval, wingless, dark yellow to reddish-brown Bite Pattern Raised red welts arranged in a zig-zag configuration Odor Indicator Musty smell resembling expired raspberries or coriander Visual Evidence Rust-colored stains, dark droppings, yellow eggs, shed skins Room Inspection Protocols for Travelers Detecting an infestation early prevents travelers from carrying pests home. The first defense begins before touching the mattress or unpacking bags.
Isolate your luggage immediately: Roll all suitcases straight into the bathroom or onto a tiled entryway, keeping bags far from carpeting and bedding while inspecting. Perform a darkened flashlight check: Turn off all interior room lights and run your mobile phone torch along mattress seams, bed frames, and headboard crevices. Scan fabric folds and wall decor: Inspect cushions, throw pillows, and the rear edges of hanging wall pictures for tiny yellow eggs, shed exoskeletons, or dried black excrement specks.
Check for distinct odors: Be alert for musty alarm pheromones, which produce an odor frequently compared to coriander or spoiled raspberries in heavily infested spaces. Decontamination Steps If Infestations Appear If you locate physical evidence of parasites, notify the front desk immediately to secure relocation away from neighboring rooms, as properties maintain protocols to dispatch licensed pest control operators. Keep personal items isolated from walls and floorboards throughout the remainder of your stay.
When returning home, seal all luggage in heavy plastic bags outdoors, unpack clothes strictly over bare hardwood floors rather than carpets, and instantly run every fabric item through a high-heat tumble dryer cycle to eliminate any surviving pests. 💡 Inspect your accommodations carefully before unpacking your bags on your next trip. 🔍 Have you ever encountered unexpected pests while traveling abroad? 👇 Leave your thoughts and practical travel safety routines in the comments below.
easyJet is the second-largest airline serving Europe (excluding airline groups). OAG data shows that the carrier has 1,659 daily movements (takeoffs and landings combined) in October, which is less than half that of ultra-low-cost carrier Ryanair.
easyJet's network currently consists of 165 airports, which include 17 in Africa and the Caucasus. It has not flown to the Middle East since 2024, when the last of its flights to Tel Aviv took off. Of course, the airline has cut various airports in 2026, with another going in 2027.
All operators have route and airport churn, and easyJet is no exception. Routes not performing sufficiently, incentives running out, fees/charges coming up for renegotiation, or otherwise, all influence the decision-making. It is a never-ending merry-go-round, and it is always about the best use of aircraft, which are, of course, massively movable assets. They can easily be redeployed.
easyJet's full schedule has been explored, which identified that the following airports were removed from the carrier's map in 2026. They include Istanbul Airport (IST), which recently overtook London Heathrow as Europe's busiest airport. However, the airline will very briefly fly from Liverpool to IST later this year, but only for football reasons. Regular operations ended in March 2026, which is why it is mentioned.
They build on cuts in 2024 and 2025, which include Ancona, Beauvais, Bergamo, Comiso, Lourdes, Rijeka, Stockholm Arlanda, Tel Aviv, and Toulon. Bergamo is interesting, largely as it is a massive airport for Ryanair, with Malpensa being among easyJet's most-served facilities. Between 2021 and 2025, easyJet flew to three Milan-area airports: Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), Linate, and Bergamo. The airline provided 17% of the flights, although still less than Ryanair (31%).
easyJet will cease flying to Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) and Yorkshire generally on January 4, 2027. LBA has been part of the carrier's network since 2010, although only one route (Geneva) was available until 2017, which was when easyJet pulled out. When the airline returned to LBA in 2021, Belfast International Airport (BFS) was initially served. Paris CDG followed in 2024, and then Barcelona, Geneva, and Palma de Mallorca in 2025, and Malaga in 2026.
Between October 2026 and January 2027, five routes are available: Barcelona, BFS, Malaga, Palma, and Paris CDG. All except BFS have head-to-head competition, while Aer Lingus Regional's ATR 72s operate to Belfast City. In those months, easyJet has only 3% of LBA's flights, which makes it the fifth-largest operator. The carrier serves all five places from Manchester, which is not far away, with many more flights.
Located in northern Norway, Harstad-Narvik is best known as being a gateway to the Northern Lights, the Arctic wilderness, and some of the country's most beautiful locations, such as the Lofoten Islands. easyJet has flown there since June 2025 from both Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) and Malpensa.
While service from AMS ended in August 2025, those to MXP continued, with the final departure taking place in September 2026. It was unclear if easyJet would return in 2027, but this has now been confirmed. Service will resume on June 29, 2027 (a week later than in 2026) and operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the 235-seat A321neo currently scheduled.

As the threat of a serious bedbug invasion takes hold of transport from the UK to Italy, the thought of the tiny pests is more than enough to make skin crawl.
For those travelling this autumn, there’s a chance hitchhiking bedbugs may have made themselves at home on clothing and luggage ready for a rent-free life in mattresses and skirting boards.
A Qantas flight from Italy to Australia was cancelled after the aircraft had to be grounded for a “deep clean” following a bedbug outbreak.
Southeastern trains operating from the affected West Marina train depot near Hastings in East Sussex have also reportedly been taken out of service as a result of bedbugs in October.
Here’s how to check if you’re rooming with an uninvited plus one and what to do if you spot the bloodsucking bugs in your hotel room.

Bedbugs are wingless, small, dark yellow, red or brown insects with oval, flat bodies that feed on animal and human blood.
They typically bite the head, arms and legs – areas on show while you are sleeping – in a zig-zag pattern of raised red bites that are known to be itchy but are unlikely to cause other health problems.
Cases of bedbugs are rising by about 20 per cent a year in London and other major European cities, a bedbug monitoring company has said.
The blood-sucking pests were seen in one in every 42 hotel rooms observed by Valpas, which produces bedbug traps and monitors, The Times reported.
While there has been a huge rise in global bedbug numbers in the last decade, frequent travel and insecticide resistance are predicted to be escalating the problem now.
Dr Cassie Krejci, vice president of transformation at pest management company Forshaw, said: “Bedbugs are a problem for all travellers, regardless of destination. They are not a symptom of uncleanliness or bad habits otherwise, but rather the consequence of an insect’s success.”
“Visitors should worry about bringing bed bugs home from any trip, particularly those in cities where we are seeing a notable increase in the number of infestations reported.”
As the presence of bedbugs isn’t determined by cleanliness, even five-star suites put you at risk of taking home the unwelcome house guests.
Although the bugs are particularly hard to get rid of or even spot with your own eyes, there are tips to detect the tiny insects once you’ve checked in.
“My biggest tip is to always roll your suitcase into the bathroom or another tiled area prior to starting an inspection of your hotel room”, Krejci recommends.
Krejci adds that cushions and throw pillows should also receive the same “flip and inspect” treatment upon arrival.
“Most hotels will have protocols in place that involve relocating you and guests in adjoining rooms to mitigate the spread of bedbugs, along with contacting a professional pest control company for inspection and treatment of the infested areas,” said Krejci.
