Batik Air is reinforcing its commitment to strengthening air connectivity in Northern Malaysia with the launch of its inaugural direct service between Batam’s Hang Nadim International Airport and Penang International Airport.
The new route reflects the airline’s forward-looking commitment to providing more travel options in the northern region, enhancing accessibility for leisure and business travellers while supporting Penang’s growing potential as a regional hub for medical tourism.
By connecting Batam directly to Penang, Batik Air aims to create greater opportunities for tourism, cross-border business and healthcare travel, further contributing to the region’s long-term growth and development.
The inaugural flight arrived at Penang International Airport on 18 October 2026, marking another milestone in Batik Air’s continued regional network expansion. The new Batam–Penang (BTH–PEN) route strengthens the connection between the Riau Islands and Northern Malaysia, offering passengers a more convenient travel option without the need for transit stops. It also reflects Batik Air’s continued focus on developing strategic routes that respond to evolving travel demand and support the region’s tourism, business and economic aspirations.
As Northern Malaysia continues to strengthen its position as an important destination for regional travel, the new service provides greater opportunities for visitors from Indonesia to discover Penang’s rich cultural heritage, renowned culinary scene and diverse tourism attractions. At the same time, the direct connection is designed to facilitate business exchanges and encourage closer economic ties between both destinations, reinforcing the importance of accessible air connectivity in supporting sustainable regional growth.
Beyond leisure and business travel, the Batam–Penang route also underscores Batik Air’s commitment to supporting the continued development of medical tourism in Penang. Recognised for its established healthcare infrastructure, experienced medical specialists and comprehensive range of treatments, Penang continues to attract international patients seeking quality healthcare services. The new direct service offers greater convenience for patients travelling from Batam and the surrounding Indonesian market, as well as their accompanying family members, by simplifying access to Penang’s medical facilities.
Through strategic collaborations with leading healthcare institutions, including Sunway Medical Centre Penang, Island Hospital and KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital, Batik Air aims to further support the accessibility of Penang’s healthcare offerings to international patients. These partnerships reflect the airline’s broader commitment to working alongside key industry stakeholders to facilitate medical travel, strengthen cross-border healthcare connections and contribute to Penang’s ambitions to further establish itself as a leading medical tourism destination in the region.
Chief Executive Officer of Batik Air, Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy, said the new route reflects the airline’s long-term vision of strengthening regional connectivity while providing more accessible travel options and creating greater opportunities for Northern Malaysia.
“As we continue to grow our regional network, our focus is on opening new gateways, expanding travel choices and connecting markets with strong potential. The Batam–Penang route strengthens ties between Indonesia and Northern Malaysia, while supporting Penang’s ambitions as a leading destination for tourism and medical care. We see air connectivity as a key enabler of long-term growth and remain committed to building a future-ready network that delivers greater value to our passengers and the communities we serve.”
Director General of Tourism Malaysia, Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, said, “Tourism Malaysia anticipates that these direct flight services will create more opportunities for strategic collaboration between tourism industry players in both countries while stimulating the growth of visitor arrivals from Batam to Penang. With shorter travel times and seamless connectivity, Malaysia is primed to become the top getaway for Batam travellers looking for rich culture, natural beauty, world-class dining, modern shopping, family-friendly fun, and premium healthcare services during Visit Malaysia 2026–2027.”
YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, said: “We welcome Batik Air’s inaugural Batam–Penang service, the latest addition to Penang’s direct flight connections with Indonesia. This route unlocks new potential in the Riau Islands, making travel to Penang more convenient for holidays, business and healthcare. Last week, I led a Penang delegation to Batam for our tourism roadshow, where we engaged local travel agents and industry partners to showcase Penang’s offerings and build demand ahead of this launch.
“This new connection supports our efforts for Visit Malaysia 2026 and will help sustain tourism growth into 2027. We look forward to working with Batik Air and our industry partners on packages and joint promotions that encourage visitors from the Riau Islands to discover Penang’s heritage, food, nature and family attractions, stay longer and explore more of our state.”
With direct flights now connecting Batam and Penang, passengers can enjoy a more seamless journey between the two destinations, whether travelling for leisure, business or healthcare. The new service also creates opportunities for closer collaboration between the aviation, tourism and healthcare sectors, supporting a more connected regional ecosystem.

Southwest Airlines, the world's largest low-cost carrier by fleet size and passengers carried, has added an extra 11 new international routes this year, all to sun-soaked destinations popular with American travelers. While Southwest is technically a budget airline, many now consider it a hybrid carrier catering to all traveler types.
Using data from Cirium, an online aviation analytics company, the carrier adds these 11 routes between November 2026 and June this year.
As Southwest continues to invest heavily in its network from the home of country music. Nashville International Airport (BNA) will see four new international routes added in 2027, with the airline confirming its intention to launch a nonstop service from Nashville to Liberia (LIR) in February, followed by Aruba (AUA) in March, and Nassau (NAS) and Providenciales (PLS) in June.
These routes will be served by the airline's fleet of Boeing 737 family aircraft, of which the Dallas-based airline has more than 800, and is the largest operator of the type in the world.
Southwest's continued expansion at Nashville comes as the airline looks to tap in deeper to the growing tourist and business traveler demand from the Tennessee city. Full details of the new Nashville international routes below:

Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is set to gain four new international routes as the airline develops its network at this Texas airport. The airline will add four routes to San José (SJO), in Costa Rica, from March, while three new services will begin in June to Liberia, Punta Cana (PUJ) and Nassau.

Southwest already maintains a dominant market share at Austin, as the airport's largest airline, and operates more than 40% of all flights. The airline launched a new pilot and flight attendant crew base at the airport in March, permanently situating itself at the airport. Full details of the new routes from Austin are detailed below:

This expansion by Southwest ties in closely to the airport's broader $4 billion expansion plan taking place. These new routes will add to the existing 53 domestic and international routes at Austin.
The final three new international routes being added to the Southwest network will begin as early as November. Southwest will add a nonstop service from Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) from November 1 to Puerto Vallarta (PVR), before new flights are added from both Columbus (CMH) and Pittsburgh (PIT) destined for Punta Cana. Details below:
Southwest will be the sole operator on the route
On two of these routes, they will go head to head with Breeze Airways, as the Utah-based low-cost carrier continues to tap into underserved markets. For Vegas, Southwest's latest addition to Puerto Vallarta adds to the airline's growing network from Las Vegas, where the airline demands more than 41.5% of all flight operations at the city's airport.

Passengers bound for Southampton on an easyJet flight found themselves finishing the journey by coach after a bird struck the aircraft.
Flight EZY415 departed Glasgow airport at 9.26am on Sunday, 18 October, for a domestic flight to Southampton that usually lasts around an hour.
The flight was an hour-and-a-half delayed by the time it left Glasgow, having been scheduled to leave at 8.05am.
Just under halfway through the flight, the Airbus A319 sent out an emergency squawk code 7700 while flying over Lancashire.
Squawk 7700 is a universal transponder code that alerts air traffic control when a plane needs immediate assistance for a general emergency, signalling the airport to clear the runway and prepare emergency services for when the flight arrives.
The aircraft started to circle the air around Liverpool, before making a landing at Liverpool John Lennon airport just after 10am.
A spokesperson for easyJet told The Independent the flight was diverted to Liverpool due to a “bird strike after take-off”.
A bird strike is a collision between a bird or airborne animal and an aircraft.
“We arranged for onward coach transfers to get customers to Southampton as soon as possible,” the spokesperson added.
“The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority and while this was outside of our control, we would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
Live updates from easyJet operations control show that once the flight landed, the airline assessed what could be done to resolve the issues caused by the bird strike.
It then said it would arrange a replacement aircraft, before later informing passengers that it would be finishing the journey by road.
“We have arranged onward transport for you. Please do not try to arrange your own transport at this time. If you find your own transport when we could have provided it for you, we'll not be able to reimburse you for those expenses,” the airline said.
Passengers were then told to collect their bags from the baggage belt before boarding a coach.
Bird strikes can cause significant damage to aircraft, with a risk of jet engines losing power should they suck in a bird.
Affected aircraft will often need to abort their takeoff or landing attempts, which can be costly for airlines and their passengers.
Bird strikes are common in the aviation industry and are most likely to occur during takeoff, landing or near airports.
The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority recorded 1,702 bird strikes in 2025 in the country, a number only beaten in the past decade by 1,835 in 2016.
