Airline stopover programs give travelers an opportunity to explore an additional destination without necessarily paying for a separate flight. Instead of spending hours in an airport waiting for a connection, passengers can turn their layover into a mini-vacation and discover another country's culture, cuisine, and attractions along the way. Some airlines even offer complimentary hotel stays or discounted rates, making these detours far more affordable than planning an independent trip.
The following list follows a geographical progression, starting in China and Southeast Asia, then moving through the Middle East to Europe. It covers 10 airline stopover and transit initiatives, ranging from free hotel accommodation for eligible connecting passengers to extended stopovers that do not require an additional airfare charge. Conditions vary considerably, however, and travelers should check the linked official program terms before booking, as hotel availability, ticket eligibility, and additional expenses can affect the overall value.
China's major airlines offer several transit accommodation schemes that can help eligible passengers avoid paying for an overnight hotel during a connecting journey. For example, Air China offers qualifying passengers one night's hotel accommodation, breakfast, and airport transfers where available in selected cities, including Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Tianjin, and Wenzhou. Air China's official transit accommodation policy explains the service and its conditions.
China Southern Airlines also offers free transit accommodation to eligible passengers, while China Eastern Airlines operates an overnight transit hotel service that passengers can apply for through its website. These programs are especially useful for travelers with lengthy connections at major Chinese hubs, though eligibility depends on the airline's rules and the booked itinerary.
The principal advantage is avoiding the cost of an overnight stay while traveling through China. However, these offers are primarily designed for transit passengers rather than for unrestricted multi-day holidays. Travelers should check China Southern's website and China Eastern's transit hotel application page to confirm availability, connection requirements, and whether their tickets qualify.
Malaysia Airlines' Bonus Side Trip program gives eligible international passengers an opportunity to add another destination to their journey. Instead of buying a separate flight, travelers may be able to add another Malaysian destination to their itinerary, depending on available routes and the program's conditions. The initiative encourages visitors to explore more of Malaysia while traveling through the airline's network.
The country offers plenty of possibilities for an additional stop. Passengers might combine a visit to Kuala Lumpur, with its Petronas Twin Towers and bustling food markets, with another destination offering historic architecture, tropical scenery, or coastal attractions. For international visitors, this can offer a more varied holiday without the planning required for an entirely separate trip.
Check the precise benefits and eligible destinations before booking, as the program's conditions determine which passengers and itineraries qualify. Travelers should not assume every side trip is free or that every ticket covers every route. More information is available through the airline's official Bonus Side Trip page.
Passengers connecting through Singapore can use their layover to discover one of Asia's most recognizable cityscapes without paying for a separate guided sightseeing excursion. Singapore Airlines and Changi Airport Group are associated with the Free Singapore Tour, which gives eligible transit passengers an introduction to the city during their connecting journey. The tours provide a convenient alternative to spending the entire layover inside the terminal.
The guided tours last about 2.5 hours and cover themes such as heritage, cultural attractions, the Singapore River, and the Marina Bay area. Travelers generally need a 5.5- to 24-hour connection to qualify, and participation depends on tour schedules, seat availability, and applicable entry requirements.
Unlike a conventional stopover package, this initiative does not provide a hotel stay or several days in the destination. Nevertheless, it offers a particularly convenient way to see Singapore's highlights, including its waterfront skyline and historic districts, during a journey that would otherwise involve waiting at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). Travelers can consult the official Free Singapore Tour page for current eligibility requirements and tour arrangements.
Etihad Airways offers eligible passengers a hotel-based stopover in Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), letting travelers explore the United Arab Emirates’ capital. The airline advertises complimentary accommodation for up to two nights in selected three- and four-star hotels, subject to its booking conditions. Passengers can turn a connecting journey into a short city break without paying the standard room rate.
Abu Dhabi offers attractions ranging from the impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum and the presidential palace at Qasr Al Watan. A two-night stay gives travelers time to experience several of the city's cultural highlights while adding another destination to their international journey. It can be particularly appealing to passengers who would otherwise have to pay for accommodation during an extended connection.
The free hotel offer is subject to eligibility requirements, including the relevant Etihad itinerary and available accommodation. Passengers must check the applicable entry requirements and booking conditions. Travelers seeking a longer visit may also find discounted accommodation options, depending on availability.
Emirates' Dubai Connect program is designed for passengers facing a lengthy connection at Dubai International Airport (DXB). Eligible travelers may receive complimentary hotel accommodation, meals, airport transfers, and, where required, assistance with a UAE entry visa. This can substantially reduce the cost of a long-haul journey, particularly when a connection requires passengers to spend the night away from home.
The program generally covers qualifying connections of six to 26 hours, though the exact conditions depend on the itinerary and fare. Emirates requires passengers to meet its eligibility criteria, and the service is primarily intended for travelers whose bookings do not offer a more convenient connection. It differs from a conventional stopover package, which lets passengers choose several days in a destination purely for sightseeing.
For qualifying passengers, avoiding the cost of a hotel, meals, and transfers can significantly reduce the total expense of an international journey. Those hoping to explore Dubai should note that the offer focuses on the connecting flight, not an unrestricted holiday. Travelers can review the conditions and request the service through the airline's website.
Qatar Airways offers one of the most affordable advertised stopover hotel packages among major international airlines. Eligible passengers connecting through Doha International Airport (DOH) can book accommodation through Qatar Airways Holidays, with standard packages starting at just $14 per person for one night. The program allows travelers turn an ordinary connection into a short visit to Qatar, with packages covering up to four nights, depending on the itinerary and selected hotel.
The airline advertises starting prices of $14 per person for one night, $23 for two nights, $49 for three nights, and $76 for four nights under its standard package. These rates are based on two people sharing a room, making them particularly attractive compared with booking a hotel independently in an international destination. Eligible connecting passengers generally need at least
Anyone travelling to see family and friends this holiday season could be in for an expensive surprise, thanks to the soaring cost of flights, hotels and rental cars.
According to travel platform Hopper, average domestic round-trip airfares for Thanksgiving are currently $402, up 31 percent from last year – while Christmas flights are averaging $452, up 23 percent.
Experts we spoke to emphasized that leaving arrangements until the last minute could prove a costly mistake this year.
To help you cope, we asked the experts for their best tips on ways to lower your travel costs, from flying on the actual holiday to considering alternatives to air travel – and being more selective about the extras you pay for.
Flexibility is your biggest ally in the battle against rising prices, particularly when it comes to choosing departure dates, airports and times.
Sally French, a travel analyst at personal finance website NerdWallet and co-host of the Smart Travel podcast, told the Daily Mail that travelers should not bank on last-minute airfare bargains.
Waiting for prices to fall could backfire, as fares for popular holiday dates are expected to rise between now and Christmas – and both holidays are on course to see their highest airfares in a decade, with elevated jet fuel costs contributing to the squeeze.
Hotel prices are also climbing, although the picture varies depending on when travelers are going. Christmas hotel stays are averaging $197 a night, up 18 percent on 2025, while Thanksgiving rates are holding relatively steady at around $170.
With Thanksgiving and Christmas among the busiest travel periods of the year, leaving arrangements until the last minute could prove a costly mistake
Sally French, a travel expert at personal finance website NerdWallet and co-host of the Smart Travel podcast
The usual approach of travelling on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and returning on the Sunday after turkey day could be a very expensive mistake this year.
Hopper estimates that domestic round-trip tickets involving a return on Sunday, November 29, will average around $604.
By contrast, returning home on Monday or Tuesday could pay approximately $350 – offering an easy way to potentially save as much as $250 per ticket.
Departing for your destination on Monday, November 23, is also expected to be cheaper, with fares averaging $370, compared with around $420 for a Wednesday departure.
And for those willing to sacrifice a little family time, getting on a plane on Thanksgiving Day itself could be a surprisingly wallet-friendly option, with average fares around $371.
'I know, nobody wants to spend Thanksgiving morning at the airport,' said French. 'But since the holiday itself is usually one of the cheapest days to fly during the holiday season, this is the easiest way to save.'
The same principle applies at Christmas, when shifting departure dates away from the weekend immediately before December 25 could make a noticeable difference.
Susannah Streeter, a personal finance expert at Wealth Club, also recommends comparing fares across the entire week rather than becoming fixated on one particular departure date.
'With demand surging around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the cost of getting from A to B can take a hefty bite out of holiday budgets,' Streeter told the Daily Mail.
'If you can shift your departure by a day or two, compare fares across the week rather than locking yourself into a particular date. Nearby airports and different departure times are also worth checking.'

Anyone still holding out for a dramatic airfare price drop may want to rethink their strategy.
French warned that, unlike hotels and cruises, where last-minute deals can sometimes appear, cheap flights are much harder to find as departure dates approach.
Her advice is to book rather than wait in the hope that fares will suddenly tumble. Hopper is also urging travelers to secure their flights and hotel stays before Halloween, warning that prices are already elevated and availability will become increasingly limited.
Once tickets are booked, the time of day you travel can be just as important as the date. French recommends choosing the first flight out in the morning, as delays can snowball throughout the day when aircraft and crews are held up by earlier disruptions.
An early departure gives passengers a better chance of getting away on time and, if something goes wrong, leaves more opportunities to be rebooked onto another flight.
She also advises avoiding tight connections, particularly during winter when bad weather can wreak havoc with schedules.
If a layover is unavoidable, allowing extra time between flights could save the misery of being stranded overnight in an airport.
And while paying more for a nonstop flight might initially seem painful, it could prove money well spent during the busiest travel period of the year.
Amtrak trains are another possibility on suitable routes, although travelers should remember that rail and bus fares can rise when demand is high, too
Kara Gammell is a personal finance expert at MoneySuperMarket
For families traveling together, taking to the road could work out considerably cheaper than buying individual plane tickets.
Streeter suggests comparing the full cost of driving against flying, including luggage, airport transfers, parking and car rental.
Long-distance buses such as Greyhound can also provide a more affordable way to travel between US cities, particularly for those booking ahead and avoiding peak departure times.
Amtrak trains are another possibility on suitable routes, although travelers should remember that rail and bus fares can rise when demand is high, too.
A longer journey does not necessarily have to mean a miserable one, with downloaded movies, podcasts, games and playlists helping to keep passengers entertained.
For those hiring a car, however, the advertised daily rate is only part of the story. Additional-driver charges, tolls, fuel policies and one-way drop-off fees can quickly inflate the bill.
Kara Gammell, a personal finance expert at MoneySuperMarket, advises shoppers to examine the small print before committing to a rental agreement.
She also suggests checking whether an existing auto insurance policy or credit card already provides suitable rental car protection, rather than automatically paying for additional cover.
However, travelers should check exactly what is included, as liability insurance and damage protection for the rental vehicle are not necessarily the same thing.
Look for a travel insurance policy that matches your destination and the type of trip you are taking, rather than simply choosing the cheapest option.
When budgets are stretched, travel insurance can look like an easy expense to cut. But experts warn that skipping cover could leave travelers facing a far bigger bill if something goes wrong.
A medical emergency overseas, an unexpected evacuation or a cancelled trip could result in thousands of dollars in costs, particularly if flights, hotels and excursions have already been paid for and cannot be refunded.
Streeter says travelers should look for a policy that matches their destination and the type of trip they are taking, rather than simply choosing the cheapest option.
For international trips, medical expenses and emergency evacuation limits deserve particular attention.
Those traveling within the US should check what their existing health insurance covers away from home, alongside protection for cancellations, delays and lost baggage.
Gammell also recommends arranging travel insurance when booking a holiday, rather than leaving it until the last minute. This means eligible cancellation cover can be in place before departure, subj

A swim in the pool at the Conrad Bengaluru has left one Lufthansa crew member dead and another foreign national deceased, after it was alleged that both died due to electrocution at the hotel's swimming pool. The incident, which occurred on Friday evening involved a Lufthansa crew member who was in the city for a layover after operating one of the airline's nonstop flights to India.
The Conrad Bengaluru, part of the Hilton chain, is a five-star hotel in Bengaluru's central business district. Both victims have been identified: German Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a Lufthansa crew member, and Juraj Horvat, a Slovak national in the city on business for tech giant IBM.
A police complaint filed by the German national's wife, Silvia Ottawa, said Theiss died while trying to exit the Conrad's picturesque third-story pool. At this point, it remains unclear what the exact cause of the incident was, and according to NDTV, the alleged electrocution has not been confirmed by authorities.
Lufthansa crew member Theiss was in Bengaluru after crewing on a Lufthansa flight to Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR). Lufthansa operates to Bengaluru with nonstop flights from both Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC).
The Conrad Hotel released a statement saying it was saddened by the incident and is continuing to work with local police.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident which occurred at Conrad Bengaluru yesterday which led to the subsequent passing away of two guests. We offer our deepest condolences to all those impacted. The cause of the incident has not yet been established and remains subject to a comprehensive investigation by local authorities. We are offering our full support to their investigation. Our team remains available to provide all appropriate assistance to relevant authorities as their investigation continues."
Simple Flying reached out to Lufthansa for comment on the incident; however, an airline spokesperson could not immediately be reached.
Four individuals were injured in the pool incident and were transported to Manipal Hospital. Theiss is confirmed to have arrived at the hospital with severe injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival. Horvat was being administered CPR on arrival; however, despite all efforts, he was unable to be saved.
Matthew Desantis, a US national who was staying at the hotel on Friday night, and Rahul Tiwari, an Indian national who was the pool attendant, sustained injuries while attempting to rescue the victims. Both the US national and the Indian pool attendant underwent treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and will be discharged.
The Conrad Bengaluru has closed the swimming pool while the investigation is ongoing, with the hotel's website stating it is 'closed for maintenance' until the end of November.
As one of Europe's largest airline groups, Lufthansa, SWISS International Air Lines, and ITA Airways all operate a range of nonstop flights to India. Lufthansa operates nonstop flights from Frankfurt to Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Munich to Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai.
Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai
SWISS operates nonstop flights from Zurich to Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai, and ITA Airways operates flights to Delhi. Other airlines in the Lufthansa Group do not have regular scheduled flights to India.
For the Lufthansa Group, the sudden loss of this crew member adds a tragic ending to the incident at the Conrad. The incident will undoubtedly raise wider questions about safety standards. Authorities continued to investigate the circumstances around the deaths.
Thailand’s international arrivals are falling short again, but hotel developers and airlines are still expanding.
The government has cut its 2026 arrivals forecast to 33 million from 36.7 million. Its 2027 target is “at least 33 million,” which carries this year’s reduced ambition into next year. The reduced targets raise questions about the demand assumptions behind new rooms and seats. The exposure is uneven, though: Bangkok’s luxury hotels are outperforming, while Phuket faces a wave of openings.

A sky-high Vegas bar, a chic new Marriott in South Africa and more hotel news
From a chic new Edition hotel in Cape Town to a revamped rooftop bar in Las Vegas, here's the latest hotel news, openings and experiences worth knowing about.
Here in New York City, it's one of the absolute best weekends of the year: Halloween and the New York City Marathon. Last year, a team of TPG staff came out to the race to cheer me on while I ran, which was a very caring way for my work family to spend their free time.
And speaking of free time, Club Med recently commissioned a study of 2,000 Americans and Canadians to find how people actually feel about their free time — and what they do with it. One statistic in the report really resonated with me: 81% of North Americans miss the sense of wonder they had as kids more than the free time they had then.
What happened
So this week I'm sharing some hotel news that speaks to that sense of wonder we all apparently long for, like a chic new hotel at the very tip of Africa to a revamped, sky-high cocktail bar with views of the iconic Las Vegas strip.
The detail
At the property, guests can stay in one of 142 rooms and suites, enjoy art and design selected as "a reflection of Africa's creative landscape," and eat at numerous dining and bar outlets. And for people like me who love to relax, the hotel has a spa.
