Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian has publicly criticized Heathrow Airport's decision to move the airline to Terminal 4 in 2028, calling the decision "short-sighted" and "bad for airline consumers." The criticism comes after a once-in-a-decade review at Europe's busiest international airport resulted in five airlines being ordered to move terminals in 2028, including Delta.
This change has been met with upset after both Delta and Virgin Atlantic, in which the American carrier holds a 49% share, argued that it will move the US carrier away from its UK partner and put the airline at a disadvantage to its competitors. Bastian has vowed to "pursue all available remedies" to reverse the decision.
As part of Heathrow Airport Limited's review, Delta will be required to relocate to the airport's Terminal 4. This comes after more than a decade in which Delta and Virgin have cohabitated in Terminal 3. This one-terminal approach for the two airlines has enabled convenient connections, premium shared amenities, and a collaboration to provide travelers access to the airlines' two extensive long-haul networks.
Found an error? Send it info@simpleflying.com so it can be corrected.
Having the two airlines co-located in Terminal 3 has provided a valuable competitive alternative to other legacy carriers operating transatlantic flights. When separated, this will undermine the years of investment that the two airlines have spent in the last decade, and it is suggested that the decision has disregarded the customer benefits that are offered by the co-location. In a lengthy statement released on Monday, Bastian said:
"Heathrow Airport Limited’s decision to relocate Delta’s operation to Terminal 4, away from our partner Virgin Atlantic, is short-sighted, deeply disappointing and bad for airline consumers... Separating our operation undermines years of investment and disregards the tightly integrated customer benefits that we offer in our co-located terminal."
As detailed in Bastian's statement, both Delta and Virgin are planning to fight this decision, and Delta is urging Heathrow Airport Limited to reconsider the decision. Virgin is considering its legal options, and SkyTeam, of which both airlines are partners, has argued that the move would put its members at a disadvantage to other airlines sharing terminals.
For Delta, the move matters as they are arguing that the relocation to Terminal 4 would split the airline from its joint venture partner after more than a decade. This would result in connecting passengers between the two airlines being forced to connect across the airfield by bus transport.
Heathrow Airport Limited has said that the once-a-decade review would free up available capacity at the airport, while easing congestion at one of the most slot-controlled airports in the world.
For US carriers, Delta is tied second with United Airlines by total destinations served at Heathrow, with both airlines serving seven year-round US gateways. They trail behind American Airlines, who operate year-round to nine US airports, and add a sole seasonal service.
Virgin Atlantic operates year-round to ten destinations in the US, with a seasonal service added during the Northern Hemisphere summer season to Seattle. The full Heathrow network for both airlines is below:
Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), Detroit (DTW), Minneapolis/Saint Paul (MSP), New York-JFK (JFK), Salt Lake City (SLC), Seattle/Tacoma (SEA)
Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), Las Vegas (LAS), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York-JFK (JFK), Orlando (MCO), San Francisco (SFO), Tampa (TPA), Washington-Dulles (IAD), Seattle/Tacoma (SEA) – seasonal
Antigua (ANU), Barbados (BGI), Bengaluru (BLR), Cancún (CUN), Cape Town (CPT) – seasonal, Delhi (DEL), Dubai (DXB), Grenada (GND), Johannesburg (JNB), Lagos (LOS), Malé (MLE) – seasonal, Montego Bay (MBJ), Mumbai (BOM), Seoul (ICN), St. Vincent (SVD), Toronto (YYZ), Phuket (HKT) – seasonal
In Heathrow Terminal 3 currently, Delta and Virgin share a number of facilities and infrastructure, including the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, providing an iconic lounge for eligible business class passengers and top-tier frequent flyers. Travelers also have access to the Virgin Revivals Lounge, which provides lounge facilities for arriving passengers.
Shared ground labor, check-in, and transfer coordination also see the two airlines working collaboratively for the benefit of passengers and airline operations.

JetBlue is launching three new nonstop routes today, expanding its network with two services from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and another connecting Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) with San Juan. The new additions bring Columbus back into its network and introduce Indianapolis as an entirely new destination for the airline. All three routes will operate daily using Airbus A320 aircraft.
The launches come amid a significant transformation of JetBlue's network, with Fort Lauderdale recently overtaking New York JFK as its busiest airport. The airline is capitalizing on the demise of Spirit Airlines to expand its South Florida presence, while preparing to introduce additional premium transcontinental services later this month.
JetBlue's latest expansion introduces daily nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale to Indianapolis International Airport (IND) and John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH). The two new services are part of a broader expansion announced earlier this year, when the airline outlined plans to add 11 destinations from the South Florida airport.
Indianapolis represents the biggest milestone, becoming a new city in JetBlue's network. Columbus, meanwhile, welcomes the carrier back after an absence, giving travelers another option for reaching South Florida. The additions strengthen JetBlue's domestic connectivity from Fort Lauderdale, where the airline has been expanding aggressively throughout 2026. JetBlue CEO, Joanna Geraghty, had the following to say:
"We're building on our already strong foundation by adding more destinations, creating more connections and giving customers even more reasons to choose JetBlue. As Fort Lauderdale's leading airline, we see an opportunity to continue growing together with this community."
The new route from Baltimore to San Juan's Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) builds on JetBlue's return to Baltimore back in July, when it introduced three daily flights to Fort Lauderdale. The new Puerto Rico service expands its reach from Maryland while reinforcing San Juan's importance within the airline's Caribbean network. Baltimore airport officials welcomed JetBlue's arrival, emphasizing the benefits of additional competition and connectivity.
The Fort Lauderdale expansion has led to it becoming JetBlue's busiest airport by scheduled departures, overtaking its longtime New York JFK Airport (JFK) stronghold. The change illustrates how dramatically the airline's network has shifted toward South Florida. Based on the winter schedule figures highlighted in a recent Simple Flying analysis of JetBlue's network changes, Fort Lauderdale now leads JFK by approximately six daily departures.
The expansion has been accelerated by Spirit Airlines' collapse and JetBlue's changing route network. JetBlue has introduced 15 destinations from Fort Lauderdale while increasing frequencies on existing routes. Its share of scheduled seats at the airport is expected to reach approximately 37% in the fourth quarter, an increase of 14 percentage points year-over-year. Peak daily departures will also exceed 150 this winter.
Crucially, the expansion is also delivering encouraging financial results. During the third quarter, Fort Lauderdale revenue per available seat mile (RASM) increased nearly 15% despite capacity growing by more than 65%. The expansion is also driving increased ancillary revenue, with co-branded credit card acquisitions in the region up 55%. The airline expects the maturing Fort Lauderdale operation to generate further unit revenue improvements as capacity growth moderates.
JetBlue's next significant Fort Lauderdale launch is scheduled for later this month on November 19, when daily nonstop flights to San Diego International Airport (SAN) begin. The route will feature the airline's premium JetBlue Mint business class, including fully lie-flat seating. This will give the airline a distinct advantage over Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which also operate the route, by making it the only airline with a lie-flat offering between the two airports.
The San Diego launch is part of a much wider transcontinental push. JetBlue is also adding Mint-equipped flights to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) this winter, creating its largest-ever Mint schedule from Fort Lauderdale. The airline ultimately plans to offer up to eight daily flights to Los Angeles and three to San Francisco, although these totals include services without Mint.
The premium expansion signals JetBlue's ambition to transform Fort Lauderdale into more than a gateway for leisure travelers heading to Florida and the Caribbean. By adding lie-flat business class capacity on key West Coast routes, the airline hopes to capture higher-yield passengers while differentiating itself from competitors. Combined with today's new domestic and Caribbean routes, the Mint expansion demonstrates how central Fort Lauderdale has become to JetBlue's future growth strategy.

Flights and trains across Spain could be affected by a nationwide general strike next week as workers across many sectors walk out.
The 24-hour strike will take place on 11 November after the country’s two largest unions, UGT and CCOO, agreed on a date to hold protests over housing issues.
This will be the first general strike jointly backed by Spain’s two largest unions in 14 years, and will take place just weeks before the country’s snap election.
The nationwide strike is expected to cause widespread travel disruptions, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, potentially impacting flights, public transport and local services.
While no specific walkouts have been confirmed, past general strikes in Spain have involved airport ground staff, air traffic controllers and airline cabin crews.
CCOO said representatives from aircraft company Airbus and hotel chain Ilunion were present at the joint assembly that called the strike.
The local publication also warned of severe disruptions on trains, including the Renfe and high-speed AVE lines, metros and local buses.
Major cities such as Madrid and Barcelona could see large demonstrations, which could block streets and impact traffic.
The UK government’s general travel advice for Spain states that demonstrations, political gatherings or marches can take place with little or no warning, particularly in cities.
It asks British nationals to follow the advice of police and local authorities.
“While most demonstrations are peaceful, there is a risk of unrest or violence. If you’re near areas where demonstrations are taking place, be aware of what is happening around you and move away if there are signs of disorder,” it added.
The strike comes off the back of a series of demonstrations caused by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman in Madrid who had lived in her home for seven decades.
The incident exposed mounting pressure on long-term tenants in major Spanish cities, where soaring rents, gentrification and a shortage of affordable housing have ignited social and political tensions.
UGT said in a statement that it has called a general strike for 11 November because the working class can no longer afford housing.
CCOO added that it has “placed housing at the heart of the demonstration, given the difficulties millions of workers face in paying rent or accessing affordable housing, and how this situation prevents many young people from becoming independent.”
The Independent has contacted Spanish airport group Aena and railway companies Renfe, SNCF and Iryo for comment.

vote. With airlines still staying away, some operators don’t expect a real recovery until late 2027.
Gulf hotels are entering their peak season well behind last year. Leisure travelers are holding off on bookings until after Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections, and some are canceling outright.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would not launch an attack on Iran before the November 3 vote. Iran has not attacked the UAE since May, but the country bore the brunt of Iranian missile and drone strikes in March. Operators say guests now fear a new round of attacks once the election passes.
“Is Q4 as good as what we thought in August? No, it’s not,” said Saurabh Tiwari, vice president for the Middle East, Maldives and Sri Lanka at hotel group IHCL, which operates the Taj brand. “Leisure travelers are waiting and watching until after the U.S. midterm elections.
