Urgent travel alert as nationwide strike threatens widespread disruption and delays

As massive protests take place in Barcelona to oppose skyrocketing housing costs and mass tourism, new resident and travel writer Jordi Lippe-McGraw shares the reality on the ground from her point of view so far.

Travelers heading to Spain this coming week are being urged to check flight and train plans ahead of a 24-hour nationwide strike.

Spain’s two largest unions, UGT and CCOO, have called a 24-hour nationwide strike for Nov. 11 over the housing crisis, The Independent reported. The U.S. Embassy says workers across sectors, including transportation and hospitality, have been called to participate.

Flights, trains and local transit could face disruptions, with demonstrations expected in major cities, though not all specific service interruptions have been confirmed.

Demonstrations including picket lines may also prompt last-minute closures, cancellations, roadblocks and an increased police presence, according to an alert from the U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Spain and Andorra. Shops, restaurants, museums and pharmacies may also close, according to the advisory.

"Demonstrations, both planned and spontaneous, will occur throughout the country," it read. "Even protests, demonstrations, and gatherings intended to be peaceful can escalate quickly or have the potential to turn violent."

FURIOUS CROWDS PROTEST SKY-HIGH HOUSING COSTS AND MASS TOURISM IN MAJOR CITY

Some details on local interruptions are already available, according to the government of Catalonia's website.

In Catalonia, public transportation — including Barcelona’s metro, buses and regional rail — is set to run at 25% of normal service during morning and evening peak periods: 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 to 9 p.m.

The bus linking Barcelona and its airport is scheduled to operate at 50% of normal service. Outside the peak windows, no minimum service level has been set for passenger transportation, though that does not necessarily mean all service will stop.

Separately, Catalonia’s commuter and regional rail services will operate at 66% of normal service during peak hours and 33% the rest of the day on Nov. 10 and 12 amid the Renfe train-driver strikes.

The strike’s effect on individual flights, trains and local services may vary. Travelers should check directly with their airline, train company and local transit operator for updates, and allow extra time to reach airports and stations.

The embassy also advises U.S. citizens to avoid demonstrations and crowds, monitor local news and follow instructions from police and local authorities.

The walkout comes amid demonstrations over housing affordability. One of the major unions said its call seeks urgent action on the housing crisis, along with better wages and labor and social protections.

Recent demonstrations and labor actions across Spain in recent weeks have highlighted several other issues, including rising rents and short-term rentals, calls to restrict tourism in Mallorca and Ibiza, and potential pay cuts for Barcelona port workers, whose protest temporarily blocked access to cruise terminals.

Recent protests elsewhere in Europe have reflected varied local grievances, including housing costs, the cost of living and pressure on public services, according to reports, though they are not necessarily connected to Spain’s strike.

Air France A350 departure deviation brings it close to American A321 at LAX

The incident occurred after the Air France aircraft reportedly deviated from its assigned departure procedure, prompting air traffic control (ATC) to issue immediate instructions to both flight crews.

The incident occurred at approximately 8.15 a.m. (UTC). Air France Flight AF28 departed at approximately 8.15 a.m. (UTC), followed by American Airlines Flight AA1660 at approximately 8.16 a.m. (UTC).

The aircraft involved were a 2.5-year-old Airbus A350-900 registered as F-HUVK, operating Air France flight AF28 to Papeete International Airport (PPT), French Polynesia, and an almost 26-year-old Airbus A321-200 registered as N191UW, operating American Airlines flight AA1660 to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Texas.

Air France AF28 departed from Runway 24L, while American Airlines AA1660 took off from Runway 25R.According to the available ATC communications, the Air France crew was cleared for take-off under the SUMMR2 Standard Instrument Departure (SID). The procedure required the aircraft to follow its assigned departure routing after take-off.

Shortly after departure, the A350 reportedly initiated an unexpected left turn rather than continuing along the assigned departure procedure. This brought the aircraft towards the departure path of the American Airlines A321.

At the time, the American Airlines crew reported being at 2,000 ft and climbing towards 5,000 ft. Following the developing situation, ATC instructed the crew to maintain 2,000 ft.

Initial reports, citing flight-tracking information, indicated that the two aircraft came within approximately 400 ft (121 meters) of vertical separation.

Air traffic control intervened after identifying the developing situation. The Air France crew was instructed to immediately turn to a heading of 270 degrees. At the same time, American Airlines Flight AA1660 received a traffic alert, with the controller reporting another aircraft at its 12 o’clock position, at a distance of less than one mile.

The American Airlines crew acknowledged the instruction to maintain 2,000 ft and confirmed that it would reduce its climb to comply with the controller’s instruction.

Following the immediate intervention, the Air France crew was instructed to proceed direct to the DART waypoint and resume its climb via the assigned SID.

During subsequent radio communications, the controller questioned the Air France crew about its departure clearance. The pilots eventually confirmed that they had been instructed to fly the SUMMR2 departure.

The controller subsequently advised the crew of a possible pilot deviation and provided a telephone number for further follow-up.

Following the ATC intervention, both aircraft continued towards their respective destinations.

American Airlines Flight AA1660 was subsequently cleared to climb to 17,000 ft, with a speed restriction of 250 knots. The Air France A350 also continued its departure towards Papeete.

No injuries or aircraft damage were reported in connection with the incident.

As of November 8, 2026, no official investigation findings or confirmed explanation for the Air France aircraft’s unexpected turn had been made public. The circumstances surrounding the deviation remain unclear.

Met Office issues flight cancellation warning in 85 areas for 17 hours - list

The Met Office has issued a new weather warning for severe fog.

The yellow warning comes into force at 6pm today and will last until 11am on Monday, covering huge areas in England and Wales.

Visibility could drop to 50 metres or less in some areas, the national weather agency has said. There is also a risk of flights being delayed or cancelled, while bus and train services may also be impacted.

"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary," the Met Office added. "Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey."

Fog patches will form from Sunday evening and develop overnight, becoming "extensive" by Monday morning, the forecaster said.

Visibility plunging to 50 metres could cause significant disruption at airports, with the Met Office explaining that fog can force air traffic controllers to increase the distance between aircraft as they land. This reduces the number of planes an airport can handle, potentially causing delays and cancellations.

According to the forecaster, fog is officially recorded when visibility drops below 1,000 metres - but conditions can become far more severe, with dense fog reducing visibility to less than 100 metres.

Road, rail and ferry travel may also be disrupted, with passengers urged to check the latest travel updates before setting off.

The Met Office also warned motorists to slow down before entering fog, and to keep a bigger distance from any cars driving in front of them.

The fog is expected to ease slowly later on Monday morning.

AI Agents Still Need Middlemen. But Will They Need Amadeus?

Amadeus has spent decades connecting airlines with travel sellers. AI agents may change how customers shop, but somebody still has to find flights, complete bookings, and handle changes.

CFO Carol Borg said the Muse-Duffel partnership supports Amadeus' belief that AI platforms will use aggregators rather than build booking systems themselves. She doesn't think it displaces the GDS model: "It actually reinforces it." But Duffel, not Amadeus, has the direct relationship with Muse.

Selfbook, Nuitée, Katanox, AirGateway, and Kyte are building similar booking and payment layers for AI assistants, banks, and super-apps — some competing with the GDS, some relying on its inventory. Pricing is carrying the distribution business: bookings fell 2.8% in the first nine months of 2026 while revenue per booking rose 5%, and management expects full-year results near the lower end of guidance.

Amadeus used its Q3 2026 earnings call on November 6 to argue that AI platforms will plug into aggregators rather than build their own booking systems, a position CFO Carol Borg said the Meta Muse–Duffel partnership "reinforces."

Amadeus says AI platforms will use aggregators rather than build booking systems, but in the Meta Muse deal, Duffel holds the platform relationship and Amadeus does not.
