American Airlines Flight Diverts After Six Toilets Fail Mid-Air

An American Airlines Boeing 777 operating a transatlantic flight from Madrid to Dallas was forced to divert to New York on Tuesday after six of its eight lavatories stopped working, leaving just two available for the 287 people on board. The crew of flight AA37 declared a pan-pan on approach to New York JFK Airport (JFK), where it landed safely shortly after midday local time.

Air traffic control recordings reveal the pilots reported that "only two potties" were operational before declaring a pan-pan. With several hours of fuel still onboard, reports have also suggested the aircraft may have made an overweight landing at JFK. The widebody remained on the ground for almost three and a half hours before continuing to Dallas.

Flight AA37 departed Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD) at around 10:26 AM local time on October 6, on a transatlantic service to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) that typically takes close to 11 hours. The flight, which was operated by a 27-year-old Boeing 777-200ER, diverted to JFK before landing safely at 12:27 PM after spending approximately seven hours in the air.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the crew had reported an "inadequate number of operational lavatories," with only two of eight lavatories working for a flight with 287 passengers and crew onboard. The flight crew declared a pan-pan, a distress call to indicate an urgent situation, while on approach to JFK. Per LiveATC.net, the pilot told the ground controller that:

"So we have only two potties operating on board for American 37."

Airlines are allowed to operate an aircraft with some lavatories out of service under approved minimum equipment list requirements. However, losing three-quarters of the lavatories with hours of flying still ahead is a different issue entirely. This can create problems with aisle queues as well as hygiene concerns, leading to the decision to divert in this scenario.

A similar situation occurred on an American flight from Dallas to London on Christmas Day in 2018, when a Boeing 777-300ER lost four of its 12 lavatories. Although there were eight remaining lavatories, the crew decided that the backlog of passengers gathering around the remaining toilets had become a security issue, prompting a diversion to JFK.

Reports have also suggested that, with more than four hours of fuel still onboard, the aircraft landed above its maximum landing weight, known as an overweight landing. Due to its higher weight, such landings can lead to overheated brakes and require mandatory inspections.

Flight tracking data shows the aircraft departed JFK at 3:56 PM and landed in Dallas at 6:13 PM CDT, nearly 15 hours after leaving Madrid. Having landed at JFK at 12:27 PM, it spent less than four hours on the ground before departing. In a statement, American Airlines confirmed the jet underwent a maintenance inspection at JFK but has not disclosed what caused the multiple lavatory failures.

The airline also did not reveal whether all six broken lavatories were functional again before the plane continued to Dallas. Because the flight departed from Spain, it falls under the European Union's EU261 regulation, which can entitle long-haul passengers to up to $670 (€600) depending on the length of delay and if the cause is considered an extraordinary circumstance.

The aircraft involved, registered N772AN, is one of 47 Boeing 777-200ERs in American's fleet. It was delivered to the airline in 1999, making it more than 27 years old. American's 777-200ERs are configured with 273 seats (37 in Flagship Business, 24 in Premium Economy, and 212 in the Main Cabin), meaning Flight AA37 was likely operating at or close to full capacity.

Passenger Steals Airport Tow Vehicle at John Wayne Airport

A passenger scheduled to fly from John Wayne Airport to Seattle breached a terminal gate Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, stole a vehicle used to tow jets and crashed it before attempting to steal another airport vehicle, authorities said.

The 26-year-old from Everett, Washington at around 5:30 p.m. got onto the airfield, John Wayne Airport spokesperson AnnaSophia Servin said.

He stole an Alaska Airlines vehicle that tows jets, called a tug, and crashed it into another vehicle near Gate 7, Servin said.

He then attempted to steal an American Airlines lavatory truck before he was arrested by sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of vehicle theft, vandalism and trespassing, Orange County sheriff’s Sgt. Gerard McCann said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Servin said.

Authorities did not reveal how he got onto the airfield.

He had been scheduled to depart John Wayne Airport on a Delta Air Lines flight.

The breach did not affect airport operations, Servin said.

Air France to Launch Nonstop Paris Flights to Nashville

Air France Nashville schedules have been filed for a new Paris Charles de Gaulle route, set to begin on 14 May 2027. According to AeroRoutes, the SkyTeam carrier plans to serve the route three times weekly using an Airbus A350-900. BY 4.0) The move forms part of a broader expansion, with Air France simultaneously filing plans for a Paris to San Diego route, also on the A350-900, starting 17 May 2027. Both announcements were filed in the global distribution system and reported by AeroRoutes on 8 October 2026.

The Air France Nashville Schedule and What to Expect One Mile at a Time reports that flight AF38 will depart Paris at 14:10 local time, arriving in Nashville (BNA) at 16:40. The return, AF39, departs Nashville at 18:55, arriving back in Paris at 10:15 the following morning. The route covers 4,372 miles and is blocked at 9 hours 30 minutes westbound and 8 hours 20 minutes eastbound. Services will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in both directions.

The A350-900 will be configured with business class, premium economy, and economy cabins. The San Diego Route: From Occasional to Regular Air France's relationship with San Diego is not new, but the nature of the service is changing. AeroRoutes notes that the airline has operated limited service to San Diego on several occasions, including November and December 2018, December 2023, June 2024, December 2024, and April 2026. The summer 2027 schedule marks the first time the carrier has committed to regular, ongoing service on the route.

Flight AF58 will depart Paris at 10:10, arriving in San Diego at 12:50 local time. AF59 returns from San Diego at 15:10, landing in Paris at 11:05 the following day. One Mile at a Time reports that the 5,698-mile sector is blocked at 11 hours 40 minutes westbound and 10 hours 55 minutes eastbound, also operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. AeroRoutes also notes that the AF58/AF59 flight numbers are currently assigned to Air France's Paris to Denver service, which is scheduled to operate until 10 October 2026.

Where the Capacity Is Coming From One Mile at a Time observes that Air France recently cut its Denver flights, and that the Nashville and San Diego routes are likely how the airline is reallocating that capacity. Denver and the two new cities are all served by A350-900 aircraft, which makes a straightforward redeployment plausible. This sits within a wider picture of European carriers reshaping their North American networks for summer 2027.

We recently examined how Delta Air Lines is approaching its own summer 2027 Europe plan, and that caution stands in contrast to Air France's apparent appetite for new markets. Nashville's Growing Transatlantic Profile Nashville (BNA) has attracted a steady stream of transatlantic routes in recent years. One Mile at a Time reports that the airport currently has service from Aer Lingus and British Airways, both members of the oneworld transatlantic joint venture. Icelandair also operates seasonal service to the city.

Air France's entry means the SkyTeam transatlantic joint venture will gain its first nonstop presence at Nashville. Beyond Paris itself, the CDG hub opens connections to points across Europe, Africa, India, and the Middle East. San Diego's Competitive Transatlantic Market San Diego already has nonstop transatlantic service from British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa, meaning all three major transatlantic joint ventures are present at the airport.

One Mile at a Time notes that Air France's arrival will make the SkyTeam joint venture the first to have two carriers serving San Diego transatlantically. For travellers, the A350-900 cabin product on both routes will include a full three-class configuration. Readers wanting to explore Air France's wider network can use our Airline Search tool to check routes, frequencies, and fleet details. The Bottom Line Air France is making a clear statement about where it sees growth in the United States market.

Nashville is a fast-developing transatlantic hub, and San Diego gains its first regular Air France service after years of occasional flights. Both routes are filed from 14 and 17 May 2027 respectively, though reservations had not yet opened at the time of filing. These are schedule filings, and airlines can and do revise plans before services go on sale, so it is worth watching for confirmation as the launch dates approach. Icelandair Adds St. Louis to Transatlantic Network for 2027

Icelandair is adding America's "Gateway to the West," St. Louis, to its U.S. map.

The carrier will offer three- to four-times weekly flights from Keflavik International Airport (KEF) near Iceland's capital of Reykjavík to St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). Service will run from May 14, 2027 through Oct. 24, 2027, Icelandair said Wednesday, with flights operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Icelandair will fly a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with 16 business-class recliner seats and 144 economy seats to STL.

More: 4 ways to book Icelandair flights with points and miles

The new route will connect with Icelandair partner Southwest Airlines and offer both airlines' fliers a new transfer point for trips between the U.S. and Europe. Southwest is the busiest carrier at STL.

"St. Louis is an exciting addition, further strengthened by our growing partnership with Southwest Airlines, which will create convenient connections between destinations across North America, Iceland, and Europe," Tómas Ingason, the chief commercial officer of Icelandair, said in a statement.

Southwest Airlines expands partnership with Icelandair: How to book a connection to Iceland and onto Europe

STL is Icelandair's 16th U.S. gateway and its first new destination on this side of the Atlantic for 2027. The airline will fly 15% more seats to U.S. this year than it did in 2019, schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows.

Icelandair is STL's third European carrier after British Airways and Lufthansa, both of which began flights to the Midwestern city in the years following the pandemic.

More: Watch us fly Icelandair 2 different ways: Business class versus economy

However, the new service is not STL's first to KEF. Former long-haul, low-cost budget carrier WOW Air briefly flew the route in 2018 and 2019 before ending the service amid broader problems at the now-defunct carrier.

Travelers on Icelandair's new STL route can take advantage of the airline's free stopover program for an up to seven-day stay in Iceland.
